Guitar Hardly Used

Why is my guitar so much louder with a pick than with my bare hand?
I've recently decided i want to learn to play the guitar. I started strumming with a pick and singing a little with it and i couldnt hardly hear myself singing then i started using my bare thumb and i it was a better volume but not a good of a tone. I was wondering how i make it quieter with a pick? Thanks
The pick is louder because it is more rigid, more tang, so to speak.
Your thumb is meshy.
But honestly, if you can't hear yourself singing over an acoustic, then you're just not projecting enough. Don't play softer, sing with more power. If you play/sing too softly, nobody will be able to hear you.
If, for example, you bring your guitar to school to play in the halls, unless your strumming fairly strongly, nobody will even hear your guitar, more or less hear your singing.

Music Theory on Guitar? 10 Points!!!?
Ok, I'm starting my first class of music theory sometime around october, anyway, I'm 15 and I'm a guitarist (beginner). Whenever I look on the internet for some lessons on guitar I get lost very quickly because they use these terms that I have no idea what they mean. I hardly know any terms or anything about the guitar except for the chords A, B, C, D, E, F, G and pieces of John Mayer songs. I want to know if Music Theory will help me understand the guitar allot better and help me get the hang of things.
In music theory, you will learn about chord structure, qualities, and progressions. You will also learn a lot of other stuff, but the chord knowledge is invaluable to the guitarist. So, yeah it'll help you. A lot of common scales to play on guitar are different modes which you will learn about in theory (Major and Minor are modes, they are Ionian and Aeolian respectively, but i've learned Phrygian scales on the guitar, so it will probably be in your best interest to learn all seven) I had this awesome guitarist in my music history class (don't know his age, but was a sophomore last year), and he had taken music theory classes and said they helped him with is guitar playing (and he also writes guitar music) So, yes, music theory will be very beneficial to you. Good luck with the class, it's enjoyable if you find you like the material, but if you are not serious about it, it can become really difficult for you.
