Is there a link between intelligence and suicide?

I've heard that ignorance is bliss. However, I've seen studies that demonstrate the link between lower IQ scores and suicide. What's your take on it? Do some people "think too much" and find life meaningless, or do others seek a quick exit because of ignorance? I'd like to bring up the fact that many amazing artists, musicians, and writers have committed suicide.
Sarcasm (especially if not used properly) isn't appreciated.
I'm not asking for opinions on the "correct" choices with regard to suicide. I'm also not asking for attacks on those that are currently suicidal. I'm asking about the link between intelligence and suicide (from a logical standpoint). I'd like to point out that in many highly intelligent people, there is a lack of religious belief. Therefore, intelligent people tend to be more isolated and less reliant on "spirits" or things that aren't real.

I think I have to agree with you in the fact that a lot of intellectuals tend to neglect spirituality. I think they reject it because it cannot be scientifically proven. Intellectuals tend to have a level of integrity that forces them to be honest with themselves. And if they honestly reduce life down to a nihilistic singularity, that can be overwhelmingly depressing. Knowing that all they love and hold dear is going to inevitably die and wither as all form must do, they will tend (over time) to become more remote and detach themselves from people so that they wont be hurt.

I believe that in order to move forward in life and feel good about it, you have to have some faith. I am agnostic personally. I keep an open mind, and although sometimes life can seem bleak, I have a sneaking suspicion that there's something special going on just under the surface.

I caught a firefly yesterday. I didn't want to eat it or kill it. I did it because it was beautiful. Nothing Darwinian in that. Small things like that give me hope.

Are there any credible studies that prove a link between cancer and chemical plants?

In other words

are there any credible professionals who have publicly proclaimed a correlation between residing in close proximity to chemically active facilities (e,g. chemical, sewage treatment plants, mines etc.) and an increased risk of certain diseases (e,g. cancer, asthma)?

If so, please give me a link, author name, artcle etc..

Thank you so much.

Benzene is a chemical with a great deal of credible evidence linking it to acute leukemias.
This is from the ACS (American Cancer Society)

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_1_3X_Benzene.asp

" A considerable number of human studies provide evidence linking benzene and cancer. Initially, increased risks of leukemia, chiefly AML, were reported among workers with high levels of benzene exposure in the chemical, shoemaking, and oil refining industries. More recently, studies have focused on workers with relatively lower exposure. Two examples are highlighted here.

One is a study of approximately 750 Pliofilm rubber workers at three facilities in Ohio, whose causes of death were followed over three decades. This study had several strengths: relatively little exposure to dangerous chemicals other than benzene that might act as confounders (and create a false impression about benzene), a wide range of benzene exposures, and very complete follow-up. It showed an increase in leukemia and multiple myeloma (a cancer of immune system cells in the bone marrow) among exposed workers.

Another important study was conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. Investigators followed almost 30,000 workers exposed to benzene in 233 factories in China, and a similar group of unexposed control workers. The large sample size permitted elevated risks to be detected at low levels of exposure. This study suggested an increased risk of leukemia in workers exposed to less than 10 ppm (parts per million).

These and other epidemiologic studies of benzene show a fairly consistent excess risk to exposed workers of leukemia, and suggestions of excesses in other blood and bone marrow cancers as well. "
