Hot Rod Flames

Worksheet 2: Some materials?
Several students devised a test to see which solids conducted heat the best. They obtained a series of rods mads of different materials, each 30cm long and 0.5cm in diameter. They lit a bunsen burner. Each student chose a rod to hold. Alex chose the copper rod, Chris chose the iron rod, Mitch chose aluminium and Kim chose glass. At the same time they all put their rods into the hottest part of the bunsen flame. When the rod became too hot to handle comfortably, the student had to let go of his or her rod. Mitch let go first, followed by Alex and then Chris. Kim did not have to let go of her rod at all.
a) Recalling what you know about the structure of solids and conductivity, suggest a reason why Kim did not have to let go of her rod.
Glass has a thermal conductivity of about 1/50 th of iron.
When the front end is heated the radiation loss from the glass surface in front of where it is held will match the transferred heat so that the glass reaches an equilibrium temperature at the cold end which is less than about 50 deg C. So one can go on holding it indefinitely.
Such an equilibrium is not reached with metals for the indicated geometry.

Dry Cleaning for Carpets
Dry carpet cleaning is based upon low-moisture techniques and makes use of specialized machines and products:
• Dry absorbent compounds or powders are used in the process of dry carpet cleaning. The powder is spread over the carpet and it attracts the variety of dirt particles, which are then vacuumed using special machines.
• Encapsulation method is an improvement over dry absorbent carpet cleaning. In this process, the dirt particles are converted into dry residues which are immediately vacuumed, making carpets instantly ready for use.
Wet Carpet Cleaning
Two popular wet carpet cleaning methods are:
• Bonnet cleaning makes use of specially designed rotating brushes and cleaning solutions for removing dirt and soil from carpets. However, some types of carpets, like cut pile carpets, are restricted from using this method due to possible damage to fiber.
• Shampoo cleaning with rotary machines is another useful technique to obtain clean carpets, but make sure that you get it done form professionals.
Steam Carpet Cleaning
Also known as hot water extraction, carpet steam cleaning is the most popular and recommended procedure these days. It makes use of a mixture of hot water and cleaning solution to deep clean the carpets.
