Bass Guitar Playing Techniques

Bass Guitar Technique Help Please?
hi i've played bass for about a year now and i always see other bassists playing like this and it says in bass books to place your plucking hand thumb on the pickup or the E string but i always place it on the bottom of the neck because it just feels natural and comfortable, so is this technique bad for tone of speed or anything else
Thank You x
For the most part play where/ how it feels comfortable. That being said, you should try to experiment with moving your plucking hand to different spots. There are a variety of sounds that you can get just by placing your plucking hand in different spots. Moving closer to the bridge will give you a snappier, more articulated sound while plucking towards the neck will give you a smoother, sometimes boomy tone. You can even try plucking with your thumb (not slapping, just talking about plucking here...but slap-pop itself has a great variety of sounds depending on the technique used...) which will give you a very round sound that some say is reminiscent of an upright bass. I will play in a number of different spots depending on what sound I want to hear out f my guitar and what the tune I am playing calls for.
Experiment. Listen to others and try to approximate their sound by altering your technique. I think sometimes players get too hung up on effects and Eq's when they have a world of different tones literally at your fingertips.

How or What can I use to Improve my Bass Guitar Technique?
I've been playing bass guitar for probably 5 - 6 years. Most of my style has been pop, rock, metal. I would like to improve my playing techniques and get into a more jazz, walking bass line style. Does anyone know some good practice tabs, or songs that I can use to practice and improve in that area.
I have Guitar Pro 5.2 if anyone wants to inform me of guitar pro tabs. I also can read sheet music if that's all you have.
Thanks for your help, I'm also open to any styles that will improve my playing.
If interested in how I currently play you can hear my recorded CD with Currentleo at, http://www.myspace.com/currentleo
Thanks again.
